When it comes to pans for eggs, chefs know best. They’ve often been through many to find the one that stands above the rest. But each chef’s egg pan of choice is different. Some love classic All-Clad, others prefer Made In’s nonstick pans, while a few prefer a vintage cast-iron skillet or a thrifted egg hopper pan. Ultimately, whichever you choose should be the pan that will work best in your kitchen.

So which pans are truly the best? Is All-Clad worth the investment? And which nonstick pans actually hold up? As Charles Gardiner, executive chef of The Ballantyne Hotel says, “with practice, a cook can use any pan with the right amount of heat and oil.” But, of course, having a quality pan to start with can only help. We spoke to chefs from across the country to get their insights and recommendations on the best pans for eggs.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Made In Nonstick Frying Pan

Material: stainless clad | Size: available in 8-, 10-, and 12-inch options | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: yes

Pros

  • Durable
  • Versatile
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Handwash only

Why we chose it: A tried-and-true nonstick pan that holds up well over time.

In our research, we found that many chefs prefer nonstick pans over stainless steel and cast-iron pans for egg cookery. Made In’s version was the top pick amongst the chefs we spoke with because of its seriously high-quality and long-lasting nonstick surface. Because Made In has incorporated multiple layers of nonstick into the pan, it is built to be extremely durable—something Rece Hogerheide, executive chef of the Daxton Hotel in Birmingham, Michigan, says makes this pan stand apart. “The nonstick pans that [Made In has] created are absolute workhorses in the kitchen,” Hogerheide says. “These pans stand up to commercial everyday use in a busy hotel restaurant, where, even after a year, the nonstick coating stays true to actually being nonstick.”

In addition to having a great nonstick surface, this pan is also versatile in the kitchen because of how lightweight it is and how evenly it distributes heat. This allows the pan to not only make perfect eggs, Hogerheide says, but it also can give a great sear on meat.

The biggest issues we found are that it is a bit pricey and that it should be washed by hand to protect its nonstick surface.

Best Value: Misen Nonstick Pan

Material: aluminum core with a ceramic exterior | Size: available in 8-, 10-, and 12-inch options | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: yes

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Long-lasting nonstick surface
  • Safe to use metal utensils on

Cons

  • Shouldn’t be used at a heat level beyond medium
  • Handwashing recommended

Why we chose it: A nonstick pan that can help you make perfect eggs without breaking the bank.

When it comes to pans chefs overwhelmingly seem to prefer, Made In and All-Clad top that list. And while Misen doesn’t seem to have the clout that those brands do, Misen produces pans that achieve that same level of quality without costing customers a pretty penny. “I stopped using All-Clad and discovered Misen,” said Ed Cotton, executive chef and partner at Jack & Charlie’s No.118 in New York City. “I’ve had mine for a year and it’s not showing any signs of sticking at all.” The pan has four layers of nonstick coating and a ceramic exterior, which makes it pretty easy to clean, even if it is recommended to do so by hand only. As well, Misen advises to not heat this pan up beyond the medium setting on your stovetop, which seems slightly peculiar, though not altogether a bad thing for egg cookery, as the general recommendation is to not cook eggs over high heat.

Best Restaurant-Quality Pan: All-Clad Nonstick Fry Pan

Material: stainless steel with aluminum core | Size: available in 8-, 10-, 12-, and 14-inch options | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: yes

Pros

  • Professional-grade
  • Safe for oven and induction use

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Nonstick surface can deteriorate fast

Why we chose it: A staple pan beloved by chefs.

All-Clad is a classic option for both chefs and home cooks. Mark Strausman, chef and owner of New York City’s Mark’s Off Madison, uses All-Clad nonstick pans for cooking eggs both in his restaurant and at home. With a flat base and curved edges, this pan allows for even heat distribution and ease for flipping eggs and transferring them from the pan to the plate. This pan is also safe for induction stovetops and oven usage, making it suitable for all types of egg cookery. However, the downsides with this pan are that it is quite costly for an egg pan and both home cooks and chefs have noted that the company’s warranty doesn’t seem to hold up. This could become an issue because, as Cotton noted, the nonstick coating on the pan has a tendency to deteriorate quicker than preferred.

Best Cast Iron: Calphalon Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Skillet

Material: cast iron | Size: 12 inches | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: yes

Pros

  • Pre-seasoned
  • Affordable
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Heavy

Why we chose it: A trusty cast-iron skillet with sloped edges that makes for easy egg cookery.

Chefs are divided on whether cast iron skillets really make for the best egg pans. Some empathetically say yes, while others say it’s too much of a hassle. This particular pan helps bridge that gap by coming pre-seasoned, thus reducing some of the hassle that can come with using a cast-iron skillet. As well, it has sloped sides, which makes it a great pan for frying eggs, since you don’t have to worry about a harsh edge messing up your flip. But beyond just frying eggs, this skillet is great for all sorts of egg preparations, including making omelettes, frittatas and shakshuka. The only real downside to this pan is that it is heavy, clocking in at 6.8 pounds.

Best Nonstick: Tramontina Professional Fry Pan

Material: aluminum | Size: available in 8-, 10-, 12-, and 14-inch options | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: no

Pros

  • Scratch resistant
  • Safe to use in your dishwasher and oven
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not suitable for induction stovetops
  • Cooking spray usage not recommended

Why we chose it: A professional-grade nonstick frying pan that makes cleanup a breeze.

“It’s one of the best pans I’ve ever purchased,” says Danny Chavez, executive chef of Art and Soul at YOTEL Washington, D.C. What makes this pan the best, according to Chavez? Cleaning it. Made with commercial-grade aluminum and an Eclipse nonstick surface, foods are not liable to stick to it, making for exceptional egg cookery and ultra-easy cleanup. Plus, unlike many nonstick pans, this one is dishwasher-safe. That being said, this pan isn’t compatible with induction stovetops (though allegedly it can be used with an induction interface disk), and it is recommended that you don’t use nonstick cooking spray on this pan.

Best Underrated: Futura Nonstick Appachatty Breakfast Pan

Material: stainless steel | Size: 8.66 inches | Nonstick: yes | Induction Compatible: no

Pros

  • Good nonstick surface
  • Comes with lid
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not suitable for induction stovetops

Why we chose it: A stainless steel pan with a rounded bottom perfect for fried eggs, hoppers and appam.

With its rounded bottom and two wooden handles, this pan might not resemble your typical frying pan. But because it has curved edges and a durable nonstick surface, it makes for one of the best pans for eggs, even if it is a pretty underrated one. Part of why this pan has a more domed shape is because it can be used to make appam, a lacy, South Indian pancake, and hoppers, thin Sri Lankan crepes that can come with or without an egg in the center. But Lena Kwak, chef and cofounder of Starday Foods, says she loves cooking her eggs in this type of pan, which she recently picked up at a garage sale. “The pan is like a mini wok,” she says. “Since it is concave in the center, I love how eggs that I cook in the pan hold a nice rounded shape. Plus, less oil splattering all over your stove.” The cool thing about this particular pan is that it comes with a lid, which can help you produce amazing fried eggs. It’s also pretty affordable, though it should be noted that this pan doesn’t work well on induction stovetops.

How We Chose These Products

When considering what pans to include on this list, we used a pre-determined set of criteria, which included material, price point, heat distribution and how well the nonstick surface performs, to determine the best pans for each category. We also received recommendations (along with some tips and tricks listed below) from chefs about the pans they prefer for making eggs, and their recommendations and insights influenced our final product list.

Features to Keep in Mind When Shopping for Pans For Eggs

Material

Consider what will work best in your kitchen and in your mornings. Chefs largely prefer nonstick pans for their ease and their ability to turn out flawless fried eggs and omelettes, but some will choose to utilize stainless steel or cast iron. Nonstick tends to be the easiest to clean, of course, and can heat up pretty quickly, while cast iron and stainless steel might take more work to wash and can take longer to come to the temperature you want. Kwak’s advice here is to “ask yourself if you have the patience to heat up a cast iron or stainless steel pan properly. If not, grab a nonstick pan.”

Sturdiness

When deciding on an egg pan, you’ll want to pay attention to how sturdy the handle is. “The handle needs to feel right,” says Monty Koludrovic, chef and culinary director of L.A.-based Botanical Hospitality Group, “It doesn’t need to feel heavy, but you want it to feel sturdy and you want to be able to give it a good grip. You don’t want flimsy, hollow ones that are going to end up pulling away from their screws and water getting in the handle, and then it’s just a whole catastrophe.” Keep an eye out for how well the handle is attached to the pan, and if you’re shopping in-person, be sure to pick up the pan by the handle and make sure it feels firmly attached and comfortable in your hand.

Construction

Egg pans should have rounded sides. This is important for maneuvering your eggs around the pan, whether you’re making fried eggs, omelettes, scrambled eggs, or sunny-side-up eggs. The pan should also have a good scratch-resistant surface, a handle that fits well in your hand, and it should distribute heat evenly across the surface.

Easy to Clean

Perhaps one of the most major points of concern, an egg pan should be relatively effortless to clean. You’ll want to look for pans that have multiple layers of nonstick coating, as those tend to be the easiest to wash by hand. Some are so durable, they can even be cleaned in a dishwasher, though to get the most of your pan, it’s usually advised to stick with handwashing exclusively. You’ll also want to use plastic or rubber utensils on nonstick pans, as metal utensils can damage the coating, which ultimately will make it harder to clean.

Ask the Experts

Q: What size pan is best for eggs?

There isn’t a definitive best size, but the chefs we interviewed said they prefer 8-, 10-, or 12-inch pans. Koludrovic particularly prefers a larger egg pan so he can get a better texture on his fried eggs. “I like having space because I like those crispy edges,” he says. “I like having every egg have its own coastline. I don’t want continents.”

Q: How do you fry eggs in a stainless steel pan without sticking?

Make sure you’re using plenty of oil and preheating the pan properly. “[The] right timing before adding oil makes a world of difference,” says Kwak. “Drop a few drops of water into a heated pan. If the water droplets pool together then you’re ready to add oil and fry the egg.”

That being said, stainless steel doesn’t necessarily make for the best pans for eggs. Many chefs prefer nonstick pans over stainless steel. Stathis Antonakopoulos, executive chef and owner of Carnegie Diner & Cafe, is one of those chefs, as he doesn’t use stainless steel for cooking eggs at his restaurant. He advises that if you do, “use a half cup of Greek extra virgin olive oil in medium heat with a small pan cover, shake the pan constantly and use a rubber spatula.”

Q: Are cast iron pans good for eggs?

While some chefs love a cast-iron pan, the chefs we spoke to largely recommend using nonstick pans, since those tend to be better for eggs on the stovetop. That being said, they are particularly good for oven usage and delicate preparations. Koludrovic uses a cast-iron pan at home to make pan-fried quail eggs for Nicoise salad so that he can cook the quail eggs quickly yet gently. “It’s a pan that takes more maintenance than a stainless steel or a Teflon-coated [pan],” he says. “[But] they hold their heat really well, which is good. They’re nonstick, which is good. You get a nice crisp on them. And you don’t have to season a cast-iron pan every time you use it. But depending on how often you use it, it’s probably a process that you’re gonna do three or four times a year on a good pan.”

Q: Why do my eggs always stick?

A few reasons, according to Kwak: 1) Your eggs might not be fresh; 2) the pan might not be hot enough; 3) the pan might be scratched; and 4) you might not have used enough oil.

Our Take

Nonstick reigns supreme. While cast iron and stainless steel can be great for frying eggs, when it comes to making your usual breakfast, the hassle just doesn’t seem worth it, especially when there are great, durable nonstick pans on the market, like Made-In’s.

Invented in Italy in 1964 and introduced in America in the early ’80s, Nutella is the ubiquitous chocolate hazelnut spread we’ve come to know and love. And while the indulgent spread is one we crave, many other brands have entered the market with their own chocolate hazelnut spreads in an effort to introduce options that are more artisanal, more allergen-friendly, and perhaps even a little bit better for you.

“The addictiveness lies in the ingredients from Nutella,” says Selena Ayala, CNP, an integrative nutritionist and health educator. “So it’s very high in sugar and saturated fat, so the excitement of and attraction to Nutella is the sugar rush, the dopamine that we receive when we have a spoonful of Nutella.”

While we will always love Nutella, we also love having options. Though before you read on, it’s worth noting that all of these spreads are distinctly different from Nutella, and while we are drawing comparisons to Nutella, all of these spreads are unique in their own right, bringing new and interesting flavor profiles and textures to the market for us to enjoy. So with that being said, read on for our picks for best chocolate hazelnut spreads that aren’t Nutella.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Fine & Raw Oat Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Butter Spread

Oil It’s Made With: None Vegan: Yes Total Sugars: 7 grams

Pros

  • Dairy free
  • Handmade
  • Responsibly sourced
  • Unique flavor compared to competitors

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Sticky mouthfeel

Why we chose it: Fine & Raw was recommended by almost all of our experts, which makes sense since the brand is known for making quality spreads. This variety in particular is great for people who need an allergen-friendly alternative.

Multiple experts we spoke with listed Fine & Raw as one of the best chocolate hazelnut spreads. What makes this brand so special is that they make artisanal chocolates, confections, and spreads by hand. Plus, their spreads are plant-based and utilize coconut sugar, which Ayala says is much better for you than granulated sugar. “Coconut sugar is almost identical to a cane sugar,” she says. “It’s really good because it contains healthy fats, and it’s high in dietary fiber, so I especially love this brand for the health benefits.”

Both Ayala and Nikki Hayes, owner of specialty food store Stella’s Fine Market, love Fine & Raw for their responsible practices. “I have Fine & Raw in my store, and I have a lot of varieties,” Hayes says. “I love that they source everything responsibly and use minimal ingredients, and it’s a local brand in Brooklyn. I just love everything about them.”

While Fine & Raw has many different varieties of chocolate hazelnut spread—dark chocolate, crunchy, classic, sugarless—we were particularly intrigued by this oat milk one, which is safe for many people with allergies. That includes those who are gluten-free, since Fine & Raw uses gluten-free oats.

Hayes has found this variety to be particularly popular with her customers. “Most of my customers, even tourists, they are coming in, they have some type of allergy, [and] they think they can’t have it. Then they turn it around, they look at all the ingredients, and they’re like ‘I can have this!” she says.

In terms of flavor, this spread leads with nuttiness and has a subtle cocoa flavor that complements it. It also has a nice saltiness to it, which balances with the sweetness nicely. The spread is thick and creamy, which is great for slathering on toast, but it can also lend to a sticky mouthfeel, not unlike when you eat a big spoonful of peanut butter. As well, this spread is on the pricey side at just under $14 a jar.

Best Budget: Rigoni di Asiago Dairy-Free Nocciolata Hazelnut Spread With Cocoa

Oil It’s Made With: Sunflower oil Vegan: Yes Total Sugars: 18 grams

Pros

  • Robust chocolate hazelnut flavor
  • Smooth texture
  • Under $10 a jar

Cons

  • Relatively high in sugar
  • Made with hazelnut paste

Why we chose it: The most affordable spread on this list, Rigoni di Asiago’s version has a robust flavor and silky texture.

In our humble opinion, after extensive testing, this spread has the best flavor on the list. It has a robust hazelnut flavor that melds beautifully with the notes of chocolate. This is only complemented by the silky-smooth texture of the spread. And it retails for just $5.79 at Kroger (though we picked this spread up at an Italian market for $5.99). Plus, it’s also dairy free, though there is a dairy version available as well.

Interestingly, the first ingredient listed is cane sugar, which makes sense since this spread has the most sugar of any on this list at 18 grams (which is still 3 grams less than Nutella). And it’s also made with hazelnut paste instead of hazelnuts, like many of the other spreads on this list.

Most Fudgy: Gooey Hazelnut Cocoa Spread

Oil It’s Made With: None | Vegan: Yes | Total Sugars: 6 grams

Pros

  • Extremely fudgy texture
  • Not too sweet
  • Lower in calories than other brands

Cons

  • Not an ideal drizzle or dip
  • Made with hazelnut butter

Why we chose it: Deep, dark, and super fudgy, this spread is great on toast or just on a spoon.

What became obvious to us when we were testing is that this spread is noticeably different. The darkest in color of all the spreads we tested, Gooey is pretty low in sugar, keeping its flavor from venturing too sweet. But its most satisfying characteristic is how fudgy it is. It has the thickest texture of any spread we tested, and we found that makes it great for slathering on toast or eating straight out of the jar.

But, depending on your preferences, its texture could also be its downfall in that its thickness doesn’t lend itself to a drizzle or dip. So, it’s not necessarily the most versatile spread on the market, but it is very delicious. It’s also made with hazelnut butter instead of just hazelnuts, which leaves some room for ambiguity.

Most Classic: TBH Hazelnut Cocoa Spread

Oil It’s Made With: Sunflower oil | Vegan: Yes | Total Sugars: 10 grams

Pros

  • High in protein
  • Classic chocolate hazelnut flavor
  • Optimal spreadability

Cons

  • Most ingredients compared to the rest on our list
  • Relatively high in sodium

Why we chose it: One of the most classic versions on this list, TBH is a great choice for those wanting something familiar but with less sugar and more protein.

Founded by Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp, TBH is a nice gateway into alternative chocolate hazelnut spreads. The taste and texture aren’t identical to Nutella, but they’re not too far off either. Plus, TBH has 6 grams of protein, compared to Nutella’s 2, making it a heartier spread for snacking.

This spread is really solid all the way around, but with 11 ingredients, it does have the most of any spread on this list. That being said, American-grown hazelnuts are first on that list. As well, this spread is the highest in sodium on the list at 45 grams, compared to Nutella’s 15.

Best Drizzle: Ghia Ghianduja

Oil It’s Made With: Extra virgin olive oil | Vegan: Yes | Total Sugars: 9 grams

Pros

  • Super easy to drizzle on ice cream, crepes, waffles, and more
  • Extra virgin olive oil gives it a unique flavor

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Messy

Why we chose it: Loved by the specialty grocers we spoke with, Ghia’s Ghianduja utilizes extra-virgin olive oil, which lends a unique flavor and makes it great for drizzling.

“Ghianduja is the product that made me rethink what I thought I knew about chocolate hazelnut spread,” says Katherine Lewin, founder and CEO of the dinner and party essentials store Big Night. “Sure, Nutella is great, but it’s never been the sweet condiment I reach for again and again. Ghianduja, on the other hand, is so perfectly balanced between chocolate-y and nutty, so smooth and silky, I not only want to slather it on every type of carb, I also want to spoon it right from the jar. And I do. A perfect afternoon pick-me-up.”

More a drizzle than a spread, Ghia’s Ghianduja is incredibly decadent. Made with extra-virgin olive oil, you get those fruity notes, as well as a lovely richness. It stays loose in the jar, so it’s very easy to drizzle over any number of desserts. Plus, it’s made with only seven ingredients, and it’s vegan.

Because of its drizzly nature, though, it can be quite messy and a little oily. This spread is also the priciest on our list, sold in packs of two for $32 on Ghia’s site.

Best for Your Skin: Deux’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread for Collagen Support

Oil It’s Made With: None | Vegan: Yes | Total Sugars: 7 grams

Pros

  • Supports natural collagen production
  • Made with just six ingredients
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Pricey

Why we chose it: With ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin C, this spread not only tastes good, but also helps support your skin.

A chocolate hazelnut spread that beautifies your skin? Sign us up! Of the six ingredients Deux’s spread uses, two of them are aloe vera and vitamin C, which help hydrate your skin and work with your body to support the production of collagen. Not to mention, this spread is also great for any type of usage—from dipping to drizzling to slathering (or just eating it right off the spoon).

The only real con about this product is that it is pretty pricey at $15 a jar.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Chocolate Hazelnut Spread

Ingredients

Hayes says one of the most important things to consider is what’s on the ingredient list. For all of the products she carries in her store, she vets the ingredients, making sure there’s nothing funky or odd in the lineup. “It could look really great, and it’s made with this and that, but it could have these weird thickeners, so I always look at that.”

Budget

Of course, how much you’re willing to pay for a chocolate hazelnut spread is a big factor to consider, as well. With Nutella generally costing between $3 and $10 for one jar (depending on the size of the jar and store you buy it from), it is still a pretty cost-effective option, whereas many of the ones on this list cost more than $10. However, many of the spreads on this list are specialty products and tend to be more suitable for various diets, since many of them are dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free, and don’t contain palm oil.

Packaging

“Customers are really savvy now, and they’re not okay with plastic,” says Hayes. “I just heard yesterday from a customer, they were wondering why a certain popular condiment was still in a plastic container. And I agree.”

Hayes considers the packaging before she buys a product, especially for something like a chocolate hazelnut spread, which you might want to heat up. “If you’re going to want to spread it over waffles or something, you need it to melt,” she says. “So unless you’re scooping it out [and] putting it in another container, some people might just put that plastic container right in the microwave, and that’s not great to me. I know glass is more expensive, and it’s harder to get. But I just think glass is way better.”

FAQs

Is chocolate hazelnut spread healthy?

It’s complicated. Hazelnuts are good for you (more on that in a minute) and cacao is good for you. “Cacao as a category is healthy,” says Sarah Wragge, holistic nutritionist, wellness coach, and CEO of Sarah Wragge Wellness. “Cacao is really incredible because it sort of rivals an espresso bean or a coffee bean.”

Cacao, Wragge says, is a neurotransmitter activator, and consuming cacao beans can even offer healthful benefits for our gray matter. “They activate the brain. They awaken that creative part of your brain. They allow us to feel euphoria and help release oxytocin,” she says. “So is [cacao] healthy for the brain? Actually, yes. But is it healthy when [brands] dump a bunch of sugar into it and syrups and gums and emulsifiers? No.”

It’s worth being mindful of the ingredients in the spread you’re looking to choose, so you can make the most informed decision. But ultimately, different experts say different things. Ayala advises eating chocolate hazelnut spread in moderation. H Coakley, MSPH, RDN, says it’s more than fine to eat it than to be restrictive about it. “I think that it’s totally okay to work that into your regular life,” they say. “I think that we have a tendency sometimes to…we tend to suppress preferences. And then you get the opposite where someone is like, ‘I ate the whole jar of Nutella,’ as opposed to just allowing that to be a part of your life.”

Are hazelnuts healthy?

On their own, yes. “Hazelnuts have a lot of benefits,” Wragge says, which include:

  • Contains antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acid
  • Helps prevent hypertension
  • Heart healthy
  • Can reduce cholesterol and inflammation

What do you eat chocolate hazelnut spread with?

You can eat it on toast, waffles, drizzled over ice cream, baked into cookies or brownies, swirled together with whipped cream for a quick-and-easy mousse, slathered on a graham cracker as the chocolate element in s’mores, or with a spoon straight out of the jar. The possibilities are truly endless.

Final Thoughts

While Nutella tends to be the easiest chocolate hazelnut spread to find in stores, as well as being affordable and absolutely delicious, there are many other chocolate hazelnut spreads on the market to love, and for all sorts of reasons. All of the ones we’ve highlighted are vegan, not made with palm oil, and have flavor profiles different from Nutella. Some offer a toastier, nuttier flavor, while others have a deep, more complex cocoa flavor. In terms of flavor and texture, you really can’t go wrong with any of the spreads on this list.

Methodology

For this guide, we tested eight different chocolate hazelnut spreads. We took into account the oil the spread was made with (if any), the amount of sugar in the spread, the ingredients listed, the texture of the spread, and, of course, the flavor. We made our picks based on which spreads taste the best, have the best texture, utilize quality ingredients, and are suitable for different diets. We also spoke with nutritionists and specialty grocers to get insight into chocolate hazelnut spreads that aren’t Nutella and which they prefer. We took their recommendations into consideration, and ultimately their insights helped us arrive at our final picks for best chocolate hazelnut spread.

Bringing together a love of kitchenware, design, and functionality, stylish kitchenware brand Material has launched a collaboration with NYC stylist Beverly Nguyen, introducing a new color to the brand’s much-loved knife trio set. Kate Berry, Chief Creative Officer of both SAVEUR and Domino, is a longtime fan of both Material and Nguyen’s work.

“I love Material’s product,” Berry says. “The quality is really good—knives are so sharp, come in great colors and the materials are practical. They’re not just about their great product though. As a brand, they, along with Beverly, really support communities and philanthropic initiatives (such as Heart of Dinner), and I love seeing them come together to help push each other’s designs forward.”

So if you’re in the market for a fresh set of knives that will have everyone asking, “Where did you get these?” then read on.

Who is Beverly Nguyen?

After a successful career as a fashion stylist for over a decade, Nguyen branched into the homeware space when she opened her retail shop, Beverly’s, in April 2021. A shop that sells design-forward, budget-friendly homeware and kitchenware, as well as specialty foods, Beverly’s also has a pop-up at Nordstrom’s flagship in New York City. Nguyen stocks all the best goods for entertaining and living, from table linens and beautiful glassware to cast iron and bottles of olive oil.

“Material and I instantly connected on our brand principles: community building, storytelling, and a practically luxurious approach to design,” Nguyen said in a press release. “It was the opportunity to expand upon these shared values that most excited me. With this collaboration, we’re creating products that bring simple and thoughtful beauty into anyone’s kitchen, while telling a larger story about tradition, innovation, and pleasure.”

What can I expect from this collab?

A trio of knives in a stunning new shade. Material’s knife trio, which includes a 4-inch paring knife, a 6-inch serrated knife, and an 8-inch chef’s knife, now comes in the color sage, a gorgeous mid-tone green that will never go out of style. The knives are made from ultra-durable Japanese stainless steel and high carbon with a solid, stain-resistant composite handle.

Also of note: This is the first cutlery collaboration Material has ever done, and the new colorway is the first one the brand has introduced since before the pandemic began.

If you, like us, are looking for a good excuse to buy some new kitchenware before the holidays set in, then we’re happy to tell you that Made In is releasing a collection with legendary chef and baker Nancy Silverton. The two have collabed before to bring us a beautiful bakeware set and a bread knife, but as of today, we’re finally able to buy them all together in one set. Is it too soon to call this an early Christmas present for ourselves?

Wait, who is Nancy Silverton?

Nancy Silverton is a chef and baker, widely known for her breads. She rose to fame through her now-defunct restaurant Campanile and bakery La Brea Bakery, which she sold in 2001. Now, she is co-owner of the Mozza Restaurant Group, which includes Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza. She also won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef in 2014 and owns a line of premium gelatos called Nancy’s Fancy.

What’s included in this collection?

There are four pieces in this collection: a square 8×8 baking dish, a rectangular 9×13 baking dish, an oval 10×6.6 gratin dish, and a bread knife. The three playfully designed French porcelain baking dishes were released in collaboration with Silverton last fall and were met with high praise from buyers, earning it a five-star review on Made In’s site. This fall, the collection includes the same beloved bakeware, but now with a custom bread knife Silverton designed with Made In back in 2020.

The bread knife is 14 inches in length with a 9-inch blade and 24 serrated points, making it ideal for slicing even soft breads. It also has a micarta handle that comes in a bone color. When it was first released, it was limited edition and sold out almost instantly. This is the first time since then that Made In has restocked the knife, as the brand does not usually restock limited edition knives. So get it while you can!

Where can I purchase this collection?

This collection is available in full starting on September 20 on Made In’s website. The whole collection will run you $379 and is limited edition. You can also buy just the bakeware set here or just the bread knife here

There is just something about beautiful cookware. In a world where aesthetic is everything, a beautiful set of baking dishes does double duty— inspiring you to cook and functioning as a beautiful backdrop for your food. Today, Staub is launching a stunningly chic collection in collaboration with the California lifestyle brand Jenni Kayne that will set the stage for some epic dinner parties. Here’s what you need to know.

Wait, who is Jenni Kayne?

Jenni Kayne herself is a designer and entrepreneur who founded her own lifestyle brand of the same name. This brand encompasses homewares, skincare, jewelry, shoes, clothing, and more. Kayne’s brand is all about the idea of living well every day, and she carries that forth with an emphasis on neutral tones, durability, simplicity, and timelessness. And it’s this ethos she’s brought into her collab with Staub to create pieces that will become instant classics in your kitchen.

What can I expect from this collection?

The collection features four pieces: a 7-quart cocotte round, a 5-quart cocotte round, a 3.75-quart cocotte French round, and a 2.75-quart cocotte oval gratin. Each piece will be in the exclusive White Truffle colorway—a creamy, off-white tone. This neutral perfectly showcases the meshing of these two brands: the cozy, chic, minimalist feel of Jenni Kayne with the classic nature of Staub. Plus, each item will include a brass knob, which is also unique to this collection. Kayne wanted these pieces to be able to fit in seamlessly in her kitchen, so this collection was designed to blend in beautifully with the cookware you already own. So you can buy just one item or all four!

Where can I buy it?

This collection is available right now exclusively on Jenni Kayne’s website, with the exception of the cocotte French round, which won’t become available until October. This line is a limited edition, so get it while you can.

For beer enthusiasts, a kegerator is the ultimate home appliance. It allows drinkers to have a draft experience in the comfort of their own home, and for many, draft beer reigns supreme over drinking from cans or bottles.

“I personally think draft is the best format for capturing the full range of aroma and taste characteristics of most beers,” says Kayla Gibbens, assistant brewmaster at Widmer Brothers.

Plus, having a kegerator will allow you to ultimately pay less for beer and is a more eco-friendly option than buying beer in cans or bottles. “Having a kegerator in your home means that you can enjoy fresh draft beer anytime, and the cost is cheaper per serving,” says Jimmy Mauric, head brewmaster at Shiner Beer. “Lastly, it’s environmentally friendly because there’s no cardboard and no cans or bottles to go to waste.”

And while kegerators often speak to beer lovers and homebrewers, you can also use it for pouring up kombucha, cold brew coffee, soft drinks, and more.

If you’re ready to serve up some cold beverages, then read on to see our picks for best kegerators.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Kegco Dual Faucet Digital Commercial Outdoor Kegerator

Dimensions: 24” x 34.125” x 25” | Materials: stainless steel | Keg Capacity: full, half, quarter, quarter slim, one-sixth barrel, or Cornelius keg

Pros

  • Accommodates a variety of kegs
  • Has a wide temperature range
  • Dual tap

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Instructions and assembly can be confusing

Why we chose it: Kegco is a respected kegerator brand, and this model has the works, with two high-grade kegerator taps and one of the best temperature ranges we’ve seen.

“There are several good brands out there,” says Gibbens. “I personally have a Kegco. It’s been reliable, keeps beer nice and cold, and had the features I wanted.”

The temperature range on this Kegco is remarkable and contributes to making it one of the best kegerators out there. It goes from 23 degrees Fahrenheit to as high as 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, it can house a wide array of keg sizes, including the Cornelius kegs commonly used by homebrewers.

What’s also cool about this particular Kegco model is that it has two Perlick 630SS keg taps, which makes it a particularly great kegerator for entertaining.

That being said, it is pricey at almost $2,300. As well, multiple buyers noted that they were missing instructions for setting up different parts of their kegerator. Additionally, many noted that the screws provided for the handle were too short, and there aren’t any hose clamps included.

Best Budget: EdgeStar Craft Brew Kegerator

Dimensions: 18.25” x 17.5” x 33.25” | Materials: stainless steel | Keg Capacity: one-sixth barrel or Cornelius keg

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Easy assembly
  • Compact

Cons

  • Some arrive dented
  • Temperature control seems to get stuck at 37°F
  • Limited keg capacity

Why we chose it: EdgeStar’s Craft Brew Kegerator is compact, easy to assemble, and easy on your wallet.

At just under $540, this kegerator delivers on quality without breaking the bank. Its compact size makes it easy to fit into any room or garage, and it’s pretty simple to assemble. However, it can only accommodate two types of kegs.

For cold beer lovers, this kegerator can get pretty cold, going as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit. And though some buyers report that the temperature control can get stuck at 37 degrees Fahrenheit, those who have tested it by putting a thermometer inside the kegerator found it does still reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additionally, many Amazon buyers mentioned receiving a unit that was dented, though to varying degrees of severity.

Best Splurge: Perlick Signature Series Adara Beer Dispenser

Dimensions: 34 1/4” x 23 7/8” x 24” Materials: stainless steel and chrome | Keg Capacity: two half barrel kegs or one quarter barrel

Pros

  • Dual tap
  • Sleek tower
  • Commercial quality

Cons

  • Very pricey
  • Temperature range tops out at 42°F

Why we chose it: A trusted commercial brand, Perlick’s kegerators bring the experience of a bar right to your home.

“Perlick is the best and proven,” Mauric says. “The Perlick Corporation has been in business for over 100 years.”

Noted for having their systems in bars, restaurants, and stadiums, Perlick also creates quality kegerators for the home. This dual tap model makes it great for entertaining, and the sleek, design-forward Adara tower will make your kegerator even more of a talking point.

If you love your beer nice and cold, this kegerator is great. But if you want to house warmer drafts, like a stout, this might not be as great, since the temperature range on this model goes from 33 degrees Fahrenheit to 42 degrees Fahrenheit.

As well, this is by far the priciest kegerator on our list, at just over $6,200.

Runner Up

Although not a kegerator, the NutriChef Pressurized Growler Tap System is worth a mention in this guide, especially if you want draft beer at home without investing the money and space a kegerator requires. It’s portable, weighing just under 6 pounds with a tank size of 128 ounces, and it fits well in the fridge, so you can have cold draft beer ready to go for up to two months without the beer going flat. Plus, it’s easy to put together and easy to clean.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Kegerator

Size

This is an important one. First off, Julia Herz, executive director of the American Homebrewers Association, notes, you’ll want to determine where you want to put your kegerator, whether inside or outside, and whether you want it to be built-in or standalone. You’ll also want to consider the size of your kegerator. “How many kegs do you want to fit? How big are each of those kegs?” she asks.

Before you buy your kegerator, make sure you know how much space you can allot to it, whether in your home, garage, or backyard.

Keg Capacity

“One of the features you want to think about is, is it a standard enough kegerator that it fits your standard half barrel of beer?” Herz says. “That’s 15.5 U.S. gallons of beer. You also have the ability to have kegerators that serve smaller sizes. A lot of breweries are also producing beer available through kegs that are maybe five gallons.”

Herz also mentions that homebrewers tend to keg in smaller sizes. So, it’s worth considering if you want a standard bar-sized keg in your kegerator (the half barrel), or if you want to opt for a smaller-sized keg.

Temperature Range

Because the optimal temperature can vary for different types of beer, you’ll want to make sure your kegerator has a good temperature range so you can change the temperature properly as you move through different varieties of beer.

FAQs

How long does a kegerator last?

“It has the potential to last for many years if proper maintenance is done on the mechanical side,” Mauric says.

Speaking of which, be sure to swap in new draft lines periodically. “Your draft lines should be replaced about every 5 years, [or] more often with very regular use,” Gibbens says.

How often do I need to clean my kegerator?

Pretty frequently, our experts say. “You should clean your kegerator every 2 weeks,” Mauric says. “The chemical solution needs to be run through the beer line and faucet.”

For the best beer experience, Gibbens cleans her draft lines between every keg. “It’s a fairly easy process, and it’s worth it to have the freshest beer,” she says. “Otherwise, monthly is a good practice.”

What temperature should a kegerator be set at?

It varies. “If we look at restaurant kegerators and that dispensing system, the commercial ones, most kegerator systems and beers are dispensed at 38 degrees Fahrenheit,” Herz says. “That is mostly designed for American lager, the most sold beer style-wise via draft.”

That being said, Gibbens says she keeps hers between 35 and 36 degrees Fahrenheit, and Mauric keeps his between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Ultimately, it comes down to the kind of beer you plan to keep on tap. For American lagers, you’ll want to be in that cooler range. For IPAs, you’ll want to set your kegerator to at least 38 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can even go up a little from there. For stouts, you can go as high as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So, do your research and determine what temperature is best for the beer you plan to keep in your keg.

Accessories to Consider Purchasing With Your Kegerator

Barworks Beer Drip Tray

While many kegerators come with a drip tray, this is a great option if you want to level up yours. Some kegerators come with a plastic drip tray, but this one is stainless steel, which will make your kegerator look more luxe. Plus, it fits two beer glasses, so it’s great for dual tap models, and it’s also easy to clean.

How to Brew: Everything You Need to Know to Brew Great Beer Every Time

Recommended by Herz, this book is great for new and experienced homebrewers alike. “It lays out everything you need,” she says, from equipment to techniques to recipes. Consider this your guide to all things homebrewing.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to determining the best kegerator for you, consider how much space and money you’re willing to invest in it. These can be pretty big and pretty pricey, so if you’re looking for a great kegerator period, the Kegco one will be a fantastic new addition to your home or backyard setup. But if you’re looking for one that is moderately priced and relatively compact, the EdgeStar one fits the bill.

Methodology

We spoke to three experts about the ins and outs of owning a kegerator. They walked us through which features to look out for, best temperatures to set your kegerator at, and how to care for your kegerator. With that in mind, we conducted independent research and found the best kegerators for the different categories listed above.

Breville espresso machines first came to market more than 20 years ago. Now, the 90-year-old kitchen appliance brand features 10 espresso machines, as well as two Nespresso machines created in partnership with Nespresso.

“The history of espresso machine development is really intriguing, and Breville is no exception,” says Matthew Davis, Breville’s U.S. product expert on coffee. “Fourteen years ago, we launched the Barista Express, and since then, we’ve sold over 1.5 million units globally. Even today, it remains the benchmark for manual espresso in the home.”

We spoke with Davis and Andrea Allen, co-owner of Onyx Coffee Lab, 2020 U.S. Barista Champion, and runner-up at the 2021 World Barista Championship, to determine the best Breville espresso machines.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Barista Pro

Dimensions: 13.9″ x 13.5″ x 16″ | Warranty: 2 year limited product warranty | Watts: 1,680

Pros

  • Has a built-in grinder with 30 grind settings
  • Super quick heat-up time
  • Good for all skill levels, especially if you’re looking to hone your barista skills

Cons

  • Over $800
  • Milk could be hotter

Why we chose it: Loved by both Davis and Allen, the Barista Pro produces café-quality coffee at home consistently and quickly.

“I’d have to say that, out of a large line-up of espresso machines, I could easily find a practical place for all of them. However, the one that I find myself going back to over and over again is the Barista Pro,” Davis says. This model is particularly well-liked, with one of the highest ratings out of all the espresso machines on Breville’s site.

“I personally think the Breville Barista Pro is underrated,” Allen says. “The Barista Pro has a fantastic built-in grinder and is user-friendly and makes great espresso. What’s not to love?”

Though this espresso machine is pricey at just under $850, it features an integrated grinder with 30 settings and a 3-second heat-up time, thanks to the ThermoJet heating system.

Quite a few reviewers noted that they were beginners using this machine and found it relatively easy to use, though it should be noted that it can take a little bit to learn your way around the machine.

Multiple buyers also noted that the milk steamer doesn’t get quite as hot as they would like.

Best Budget: Duo-Temp Pro

Dimensions: 12.6″ x 10.1″ x 13.1″ | Warranty: 1 year limited product warranty Watts: 1,600

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Easy to use
  • Built-in milk frother

Cons

  • Grinder and pressure gauge not included
  • Noisy

Why we chose it: For under $500, the Duo-Temp Pro is durable, consistent, and allows you to steam milk to your liking.

At just under $500, this model is great for buyers looking for a straightforward espresso machine. It’s noted for its ease of use and its consistency. Plus, it has a built-in milk frother that can help you master your latte art with its microfoam capability.

This machine is a great entryway into the world of at-home espresso-making because of its simplicity. But with that simplicity, it lacks a few components of more advanced machines, such as a grinder or a pressure gauge, so those who are more experienced might want a more sophisticated machine.

As well, some buyers noted that this espresso machine can be particularly noisy.

Best for Beginners: Bambino Plus

Dimensions: 7.7″ x 12.6″ x 12.2″ | Warranty: 2 year limited product warranty | Watts: 1,560

Pros

  • Simplistic
  • Great for anyone working with limited counter space
  • Easy to use
  • Heats up quickly

Cons

  • Portafilter can be tricky to work with

Why we chose it: The Bambino Plus’ compact size, simplicity, and ease of use make it a great first machine for those who are new to owning an espresso maker.

“The Bambino series holds our most compact and simplistic designs,” Davis says. “If simplicity is the main goal, then the Bambino Plus is a killer first machine as it streamlines everything including the hardest technique—getting perfect milk!”

Since it’s so compact, the Bambino Plus fits easily into any kitchen. Plus, it’s pretty straightforward to use with only five buttons on its interface, and it can heat up in just 3 seconds.

The biggest difficulty users have with this machine is that the portafilter can be hard to remove.

Best Commercial Quality: Oracle Touch

Dimensions: 15.4″ x 14.7″ x 17.8″ | Warranty: 2 year repair warranty | Watts: 1,800

Pros

  • Completely automatic
  • Allows users to create and save their own coffee drinks
  • 45 grind settings

Cons

  • Needs 5 minutes to heat up
  • Almost $3,000

Why we chose it: The Oracle Touch delivers a high-quality, personalized coffee experience at home.

“The Oracle Touch is an absolute gem of a machine,” Davis says. “Full personalization and automation without any compromise on quality. We’ve hosted latte art competitions on this machine and even seasoned baristas love it!”

The Oracle Touch is the Breville espresso machine with the most bells and whistles. Allen says it even matches the quality of a commercial machine, which might explain its almost $3,000 price tag—the most expensive of all Breville’s espresso machines.

It has a built-in grinder with 45 settings and a touchscreen interface that allows users to easily select the drink they want to make. Plus, you can create and save up to eight of your own coffee creations on this machine. It also has a dual boiler, which allows you to simultaneously brew coffee and steam milk.

While the machine needs 5 minutes to heat up, it can be programmed to turn on at a specific time. If you have that scheduled, then this espresso machine is the fastest Breville sells due to its dual boiler.

Best Nespresso Machine by Breville: Creatista Pro

Dimensions: 16.9″ x 7.7″ x 12.9″ | Warranty: 2 years | Watts: 1,500

Pros

  • Color touchscreen
  • Utilizes Breville’s milk-steaming technology
  • Features ThermoJet heating system

Cons

  • Over $800

Why we chose it: A Nespresso machine made in partnership with Breville, the Creatista Pro features milk-steaming technology and a super fast heating system.

Breville has worked with Nespresso to create their own exclusive line of Nespresso machines. The Creatista Pro is their latest model in that line, having launched in 2020.

Designed in partnership with Nespresso, the Creatista machines have Breville’s fingerprints throughout, including a color touchscreen and an automatic steam wand to help you create microfoam in your milk. Plus, the Creatista Pro has Breville’s ThermoJet heating system, which means you can brew your drink in less than a minute.

And though this machine’s price tag is on par with some of Breville’s espresso machines, it is pricey compared to other Nespresso machines.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Breville Espresso Machine

Lifestyle

One of the first aspects you’ll want to consider before investing in an espresso machine is how it fits into your lifestyle. This includes how often you’re planning to use it, how many people will be using it in your household, how much counter space you have (and are willing to dedicate to your new espresso machine), and ease of use.

“If you’re regularly entertaining or serving a large family each morning, you might want to consider an Oracle or Oracle Touch,” Davis says.

Skill Level

Breville has lots of different espresso machines, and while Davis says all of them are designed to work for all skill levels, some machines might be intimidating if you’re new to brewing espresso at home. So, Davis poses two questions to consider before deciding on a machine: “How comfortable or familiar are you with espresso?” and “Where would you like to be this time next year with espresso?” Your skill level and your desire (or lack thereof) to grow as an at-home barista will influence which machine you ultimately choose.

Grinder

This is one of the biggest considerations when looking to purchase a Breville espresso machine. “I think the need and/or desire for a grinder is sort of the dividing force here,” Allen says. “The built-in grinders are great, but if you already have an espresso grinder, the Dual Boiler machine is perfect. Additionally the Bambino can be used really well with pre-ground coffee and also fits easily into a cabinet for small counter-space kitchens. Deciding whether or not you want to grind is the big decision.”

If you decide on a machine with an integrated grinder, you’ll want to consider if it gives you the grind options you’re looking for. If not, you might want to opt for an espresso machine without a grinder and then purchase a separate grinder with the settings you’re after.

FAQs

How long do Breville espresso machines last?

An espresso machine’s longevity depends on how well you maintain it, according to Davis. “Breville espresso machines will live within relativity to the TLC its owner will give it,” he says. “I know people who still crank out daily espressos on the original Barista Express from over a decade ago.”

His tips for keeping your Breville in tip-top shape? “Descale regularly like you change the oil on your car. Use filtered water if at all possible. Clean as you go!”

Where are Breville espresso machines made?

“Our products are designed in Australia and built in China,” Davis says.

What’s the difference between Breville, DeLonghi, and Saeco?

There are many differences between Breville and its competitors, but perhaps the biggest is dedication, Davis says. “A big one would be our dedication to the ingredient and immersion in the craft and process of everything. We have dedicated coffee professionals that transitioned to product development as well as the other way around.”

And part of that dedication is being open to new perspectives. “For all of our products, but specifically with coffee, we really love working with external professionals to ensure we never close our opinions and perspectives,” Davis says. “It’s easy to live within an echo chamber and a lot of niche industries fall victim to this. Alternatively, many brands will just avoid it altogether. Having teams that constantly listen to both the industry and the end user results in products that don’t cut corners, but round them out for everyone.”

Accessories to Consider Purchasing With Your Breville Espresso Machine

Smart Grinder Pro

If you opt for an espresso machine that doesn’t have a built-in grinder, consider picking this one up. With 60 grind settings, you can use this grinder for your espresso, as well as French press and drip coffee, so you’ll get good mileage out of this. Plus, it comes in 10 different colors, so there’s sure to be one that fits in beautifully with your kitchen.

Bean Box

If you’re not already stocked up on coffee, consider browsing Bean Box. You can buy whole beans or ground coffee in a one-time purchase or a subscription. If you choose to get a subscription, you can have one or two bags delivered weekly, biweekly, or monthly, and you can choose from flavor profiles like light and bright, dark and toasty, espresso, or curator’s choice to get seasonal and classic selections. Or if you just want a couple bags every so often, you can peruse Bean Box’s site and pick up blends like Dark Side of the Moon, which has notes of caramel, chocolate, and toast, or Na Pali Blend, which tastes of macadamia nut and calamansi lime.

Final Thoughts

If you’re searching for a new espresso maker, whether it’s your first one or you’re looking to upgrade, Breville makes espresso machines for all types of coffee drinkers. But we’ve found the best Breville espresso machines for general at-home use are the ones with ThermoJet heating technology and a built-in grinder, like the Barista Pro.

Methodology

We spoke with a member of Breville’s team and a coffee expert to hear what their favorite Breville espresso machines are and to get some insights on the company. We then did our own research to determine the best Breville espresso machines. After that, we broke it down by category, figuring out the best machine for different needs and levels of expertise.

For those times when we want to pretend we’re on a warm beach, sipping a frozen daiquiri, we need to employ a blender for frozen drinks. Something high-powered that effortlessly crushes ice, is easy to use, and easy to clean will do very nicely. The good news is there’s quite a few on the market right now that fit this description. The bad news is that finding the best one for you can be overwhelming.

But there’s more good news—we spoke to experts to get their recommendations, and we tested an array of blenders, so you don’t have to. Read on to see our top picks for best blenders for frozen drinks.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: KitchenAid K400 Variable Speed Blender

Watts: 1200 Capacity: 56 fluid ounces Dishwasher Safe: yes, on the top shelf

Pros

  • Great for a variety of frozen drinks
  • Three pre-programmed settings—all for drinks
  • Relatively quiet

Cons

  • Has a tendency to leak
  • Over $350

Why we chose it: Recommended by one of our experts, this KitchenAid blender can help you make all sorts of frozen drinks without much effort on your part.

“I use the KitchenAid K400 at home for all my blended drink needs,” says Natalie Migliarini, author of Beautiful Booze and social media maven. “One thing that I really like about this blender is that one of the dials on the face is actually a blended cocktail, and it blends to the perfect consistency for what I like. It also has an ice crush option, which is great for when I’m making a bramble or other cocktail that’s served over crushed ice. I can just put the ice in the blender, and it will make it perfectly crushed for me to put in my glass and pour my cocktail over the top.”

With its three pre-programmed settings for drinks—ice crush, icy drinks, and smoothie—this blender was made for producing all manner of cold drinks. And to sweeten the pot, it’s not nearly as noisy as some of the other blenders on the market, or even on this list.

That being said, this is a pricey blender, coming in at just over $350. And some buyers have noted that their blenders leaked out of the bottom.

Best Value: Ninja TWISTi High-Speed Blender Duo

Watts: 1600 Capacity: 34 fluid ounces Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Timer and program settings make it easy to use
  • Pulverized ice perfectly
  • Under $140

Cons

  • Exceptionally loud
  • Biggest blender cup can only hold 4.2 cups

Why we chose it: This Ninja blender comes with five program buttons and three different sizes of blender cups, all for less than $140.

For less than $200, you can have a blender that makes perfectly sippable slushies. Outfitted with five program buttons broken into two categories—drinkable: extract, smoothie, and frozen; and spoonable: spread and bowl—this blender can make a whole range of food and drinks with ease. But we’re here to talk about the best blenders for frozen drinks, and we’re happy to report that this makes those very, very well. The frozen setting expertly pulverizes ice while combining all the ingredients together to create a perfect slush. And though it does a great job, it is incredibly loud, so it might not be perfect for those with grumpy neighbors…or grumpy family members.

The blender also comes with three different cup sizes, so you can make a single-serve frozen margarita or enough for your friends. However, the largest cup (the pitcher) only makes 4.2 cups worth of drinks, so if you are entertaining lots of people, you’d have to make multiple batches.

Best Splurge: Vitamix Professional Series 300 Blender

Watts: 1000 | Capacity: 64 fluid ounces | Dishwasher Safe: not expressly stated

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Easy to clean
  • Large pitcher

Cons

  • Almost $450

Why we chose it: Recommended by one of our experts, this Vitamix is expensive, but totally worth it for making lush frozen drinks.

Revered by many as one of the best blenders on the market, this Vitamix is powerful, producing smooth frozen drinks. That’s why Micah Wilder, beverage director at MercyMe, loves it. “The [1,000] watts and speed dial give powerful precision resulting in luxurious frozen cocktails,” he says.

And despite the fact that it appears this Vitamix should not be put in the dishwasher, many buyers say it’s very easy to clean by just adding some soap and hot water to the pitcher, putting the lid on and blending for a few seconds, then rinsing.

While this blender is well-loved, it is an investment due to its price. But as far as we can tell, it’s worth the cost if you’re looking to splurge on a great, durable blender.

Best Smart Blender: NutriBullet Smart Touch Blender Combo

Watts: 1500 Capacity: 64 fluid ounces Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Produces frozen drinks fast
  • Comes with three blender cups
  • Has four program buttons
  • Under $200

Cons

  • Super loud
  • Frozen drinks setting is not the best for pulverizing ice

Why we chose it: With a sleek interface and four program settings, this NutriBullet blender can whip up an icy drink in under a minute.

At just under $190, this blender will be a hit the next time you make frozen drinks for your friends. It has four program settings—purées, soups, frozen drinks, and smoothies—along with options for pulsing, low, medium, and high. Though, it’s worth noting that this blender is so loud it actually caused our tester to jump when first turning it on.

When testing this blender, we made piña coladas using the frozen drinks setting. Though it made the drinks in under 30 seconds, there were still some small chunks of ice that needed to be blended further. So while this blender is fast, it might be worth adding in a few extra pulses on something like this.

Best Multi-use: Hamilton Beach Professional 1800 Watt Peak Power Blender With Programs

Watts: 1800 | Capacity: 64 fluid ounces | Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Has four program settings and variable speed dial
  • Straightforward to use
  • Dishwasher safe and has a clean setting

Cons

  • Doesn’t have a locking base

Why we chose it: With its pre-programmed settings, a pulse button, and a variable speed dial, this Hamilton Beach Professional blender can make all sorts of different food and drinks, including slushies.

Housing a blade that can reach up to 140 mph, this blender is all business. With pre-programmed settings for purée, crush, smoothie, and clean and a speed dial ranging from one through 10, you have total control over the texture of your concoction. Using the crush setting, it made a smooth, sippable piña colada super quick. And since it has only two buttons and a dial, the blender is very simple to use.

Plus, this blender is both dishwasher safe and has a cleaning setting that allows you to get any stuck on stuff off with ease.

The only thing we weren’t jazzed about with this blender is that, unlike many blenders we tested, this one doesn’t have a locking function on the base. Meaning, you basically set the pitcher on top of the base and turn it on. Though it performed well, it is slightly worrisome from a safety perspective to not have the pitcher lock into place.

Best Compact: Beast Blender + Hydration System

Watts: 1000 Capacity: 750 milliliters in the large blender cup, and 350 milliliters in the small blender cup Dishwasher Safe: everything except for the base of the blender and the blade is dishwasher safe

Pros

  • Under $200
  • You get lots of components
  • It’s not crazy loud
  • Looks beautiful

Cons

  • No program options

At 1,000 watts, this blender is a drink-making workhorse. When we tested it, it produced a frothy, creamy, well-blended piña colada.

One of the best aspects of this blender is its noise level. It makes noise, sure, but it’s not unreasonably loud, making it a great choice for apartments, dorms, or anyone who just doesn’t like noisy machines.

Plus, you get good bang-for-your-buck with this blender system. For $185, you get the blender base, the blade attachment, two different sizes of blender cups, a drinking lid and carry cap that can be attached to them, and a glass water bottle with a removable infusion chamber. Not to mention, it is one of the prettiest, sleekest blenders around.

The thing is, though, this blender doesn’t have program buttons. It only has one button that can be used for pulsing or steady blending. That’s really it. You can still make a fair amount in this blender, but it doesn’t offer the same options that other blenders with built-in programs do.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Blender for Frozen Drinks

Power

When making frozen drinks, you want a powerful blender that’s at least over 1,000 watts, Wilder says. “The higher wattage ensures that the ice is crushed effectively,” he says.

“If your blender doesn’t have sufficient power you’re just not going to get the consistency you need,” says Migliarini.

Ribbed Jar

Migliarini and Bad Birdy, CEO of Kuduowl, global cocktail creative, and restaurant consultant, both recommend looking for a blender with a ribbed jar. This will help you achieve a nice, consistent texture in your frozen drinks. “A vortex-creating ribbed jar design helps ensure a seamless blend,” says Bad Birdy.

Asymmetric Blade

To make sure your frozen drink gets properly blended, you’re going to want a blender that has an asymmetric blade. “For iced drinks, look for a blender that focuses on various textures and speeds by the use of an asymmetric blade,” Bad Birdy advises. “This ensures that it can pull ingredients to create an ideal blend.”

FAQs

Can you put frozen fruit in a blender?

Yes! If you have a high-powered blender that does well with blending ice, it should blend up frozen fruit no problem. However, if you have a lower-powered blender, you might end up with a drink that isn’t as smooth if you put in fully frozen fruit. So, you’ll want to let the fruit thaw ever so slightly on the counter or pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it a little softer and easier to blend.

Can you use a regular blender for frozen drinks?

According to our experts, yes, but not every blender produces great frozen drinks. And if you’re using a blender that isn’t very powerful, you might want to change your approach. “If you are working with a lower grade or wattage blender,” Wilder says, “I would recommend starting it out at a slower speed and adding ice into the mix in smaller portions, instead of all at once.”

How do you make frozen drinks in a blender?

There are lots of ways! We used this recipe for testing the blenders, but Wilder also gave us the recipe for his Kick-Ass Colada, which he serves at Mercy Me. Here is the recipe, if you’re looking for a new take on a piña colada, featuring caramelized pineapple.

Kick-Ass Colada

Created by Micah Wilder, available at Mercy Me

Caramelized Pineapple:

1 oz Ron Zacapa 23

.75 oz Licor 43

2 tsp salted butter

1 ripe Pineapple

Skin, core, and cut a ripe pineapple into wedges. Preheat oven to 375°F. Place pineapple slices on a rimmed baking sheet. Stir together rum, Licor 43, brown sugar, and butter in a saucepan on low heat. Brush rum mixture onto pineapples, then roast for 30 min or until pineapple is caramelized. Set the pineapples on a wire rack to cool, then freeze in a quart container.

Cocktail:

3 cups ice

1 cup frozen caramelized pineapple chunks

3 oz coconut cream

2 oz coconut milk

1 tsp kosher salt

1 oz simple syrup 1:1

1 oz lime juice

3 oz white rum

Pineapple slice for garnish

Lime wheel for garnish

Combine everything except the garnish in Vitamix. Produces 2 servings.

Final Thoughts

The best blenders for frozen drinks are high-powered with an asymmetric blade and ribbed jar and, in our experience, have programs that are specifically set for making frozen drinks. These blenders will give you the smoothest texture with the best blend.

Methodology

We talked with experts and got their insights and recommendations for blenders for frozen drinks. Then, we did research independently and chose four blenders to test for ourselves. We tested these blenders using a variation of this piña colada recipe, taking note of how well the blenders crushed ice, how easy they were to use, how well the blenders combined all ingredients, what program buttons they offer, and how easy they were to clean.

There is a whole world of tasty food you can make with an electric smoker, whether that’s a rack of ribs, brisket, a smoked turkey, or even cold-smoked fish and cheese. Though electric smokers impart a subtler flavor than other types of smokers, BBQGuys Chef and Product Expert Tony Matassa says it’s a difference that shouldn’t hold grillers back.

“Electric smokers definitely hold their own amongst charcoal, gas, and pellet smokers,” Matassa says. “They are easy to set up and use, easy to clean, and can get up to temperature faster than most other methods. Electric smokers do lack a more robust smoke flavor profile, but most people won’t notice this subtle difference. To make up for that, they are consistent and are as close to ‘set it and forget it’ as we currently have in the cooking world.”

Experts, like Matassa, gave us their recommendations and insights on electric smokers, and coupled with our own research, we determined the best electric smokers to invest in right now.

The Best Electric Smokers: Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Cookshack SM045 Supersmoker

Weight: 103 pounds Product Dimensions: 20.5 x 19.5 x 35 inches Material: stainless steel Maximum Temperature: 300°F

Pros

  • Reliable
  • Maintains consistent temperatures
  • Well-constructed
  • Grill racks are dishwasher-safe

Cons

  • Over $1,000

Why we chose it: One of Matassa’s favorites, this smoker is heavy-duty, reliable, and easy to clean.

“Cookshack has been my go-to electric smoker since I began working at BBQGuys 14 years ago,” Matassa says. “They have consistently and reliably helped me smoke food for tens of thousands of people.”

One of the reasons Matassa loves Cookshack so much is because of how well it maintains temperatures. But he also considers this one of the best electric smokers for home use because of its construction. “[Cookshack smokers] are very well-built, stainless-steel, double-walled, and fully insulated,” he says.

As a bonus, the three racks and the grills are dishwasher safe, making clean-up that much easier.

The downside: this smoker is pricey, coming in at $1,417.50.

Best Budget: Masterbuilt Digital Electric Smoker

Weight: 45.9 pounds Product Dimensions: 19.88 x 20.47 x 33.26 inches | Material: stainless steel Maximum Temperature: 275°F

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Less than $200
  • Produces good amount of smoke and utilizes wood chips

Cons

  • Digital panel controls can be hard to read in sunlight
  • Temperature fluctuates by about 20 degrees
  • You will more than likely need an extension cord

Why we chose it: Going for less than $200, this Masterbuilt model is a great electric smoker for beginners and seasoned smokers alike.

There’s lots to love about this electric smoker. For one, it’s easy to assemble and use, with four racks for smoking and the ability to utilize wood chips to impart that nice smoky flavor. And perhaps best of all, you can purchase this unit for just $157.

Keep in mind, though, that this smoker tends to fluctuate within a 20-degree range and that you probably will need to get an extension cord, as the main cord is less than 5 feet long. Also worth mentioning is that some reviews of this electric smoker note that the digital controls on the unit can be challenging to read when it’s sunny out.

Best Bluetooth: Traeger Pro 780

Weight: 173 pounds Product Dimensions: 48.7 x 26.7 x 54.4 inches Material: stainless steel Maximum temperature: 500°F

Pros

  • Reliable
  • WiFi-compatible, complete with an app for your phone
  • Allows for searing and grilling, in addition to smoking
  • Good customer service

Cons

  • Nearly $1,000
  • Temperature control can be wonky

Why we chose it: One of the best grill brands on the market, this Traeger makes for a top-notch, Bluetooth-compatible smoker, which can connect to the brand’s app to help you keep track of both time and temperature while you’re cooking.

While Traegers are widely known and loved pellet grills, Daniel Castillo, owner and pitmaster of Heritage Barbecue, recommended it as a great electric smoker, especially for its Bluetooth capabilities.

“It’s definitely for people that are on the go,” he says. “They have programs where you can download an app on your phone and turn [the smoker] on when you want to turn it on, so that way when you get home, [you can] take something out of the refrigerator, throw some rub on it, and then just pop it in there…You don’t have to sit around and babysit it.”

Castillo also likes Traegers for their reliability and the quality of their customer service. This particular model from the Pro Series has 780 square inches of cooking space, and unlike vertical smokers, it allows you to sear and grill food as well as smoke.

However, this Traeger costs a pretty penny at $999.99. Plus, some buyers have mentioned that their temperatures are off, with some units smoking too hot and others not getting hot enough.

Best Analog: Char-Broil Analog Electric Smoker

Weight: 49.5 pounds | Product Dimensions: 15 x 20.7 x 33.5 inches | Material: stainless steel | Maximum Temperature: 275°F

Pros

  • Heavy duty, even down to the two door latches
  • Relatively affordable
  • Easy assembly
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Have to open door to refill wood chips

Why we chose it: Although analog might not be everyone’s preference, this is one of the best electric smokers for home use due to its quality door latches, its approachable price point, and its ease of assembly.

There are many aspects to this smoker that make it particularly intriguing for home cooks. For one, it is well-constructed with two sturdy door latches. For another, it’s pretty inexpensive for a smoker, coming in at a little over $200. Lastly, it is both easy to assemble and easy to work with the customer service team if the need arises.

One downside: Adding more wood chips requires opening the door to the smoker, allowing heat (and smoke) to escape in the process.

Best Professional Grade: Smokin Tex Pro Series 1500 Smoker

Weight: 150 poundsProduct Dimensions: 21 x 23 x 41 inches Material: stainless steelMaximum Temperature: 250°F

Pros

  • Heavy duty
  • Holds temperature consistently
  • Produces bold, smoky flavor

Cons

  • Cook can be uneven
  • Almost $2,000

Why we chose it: Smokin Tex’s electric smoker was recommended by two experts for its durability and how tasty the food turns out.

“This smoker is built like a heavy-duty, stainless-steel tank,” Matassa says. It has double-wall insulation, which helps it maintain the temperature and allows it to come back up to the temperature fast, Matassa says. Sturdy construction ensures a long-lasting product when properly cared for.

Being a commercial-grade smoker, it comes with a hefty price tag of nearly $2,000. And while Bryce Shuman, executive chef of Sweetbriar, uses this smoker at his restaurant in New York City, he’s found that you have to know how to work with it to get the cook right. “The cook can sometimes be a little uneven, but you just rotate [the food] halfway through the cook,” he says.

How We Chose The Best Electric Smokers

We spoke with four barbecue experts to get their recommendations for the best electric smokers and their tips for what to look out for and how to use them. With their advice in mind, we scoured the internet for electric smokers that were easy to use, held heat well, and were highly rated. We also looked for whether the smokers are digital or analog, WiFi-enabled, and how well-constructed the smoker is. Together, all of this led us to our top selections.

Features to Keep in Mind When Shopping for an Electric Smoker

Wood-fired vs. Electric

If you’re debating between a wood-fired smoker or an electric one, you’ll want to keep in mind that electric smokers generally have more racks in them and allow for greater control over the temperature than wood-fired smokers. That being said, wood-fired smokers generally impart a bolder smoky flavor to foods, whereas electric smokers will impart a more subtle flavor. Plus, it can be tricky to achieve a bark on your smoked meats with an electric smoker, Matassa says. “If this is important to you, you can smoke your food in an electric smoker, then finish the food in a 425°F oven for 5 to 10 minutes, to get the prized ‘bark’,” he says.

Electrical Circuits

Before investing in an electric smoker, make sure there’s an outlet than be solely devoted to the smoker, with no other appliances plugged into it. “This is important because if a user plugs their smoker into a non-dedicated circuit, the smoker might work, as far as turning on and such, but the outcome will vary,” Matassa says. “Here is a real world example from two weeks ago: I plugged an electric smoker into a loaded circuit and ran temperature tests. Then, I plugged the same smoker into a dedicated 15-amp circuit and ran the same tests. The smoker worked on both circuits, except there was a 100°F temperature difference in the output.”

Insulation

You’ll also want to consider the quality of the insulation in any electric smoker you’re eyeing. This could make a big difference in the outcome of your food if the smoker can’t hold the proper temperature for the necessary length of time. “From the outside most smokers look similar, but to maintain consistent temperatures inside of the smoker, you need proper insulation,” Matassa says. “Proper insulation is like 304- or 316-grade stainless steel. It costs the manufacturer considerably more to include the material, so they won’t forget to mention it in their marketing and product materials.”

Ask the Experts

Do I have to soak wood chips before using them?

Only if you want to delay the smoke, Matassa says. “There is no need to soak wood chips unless you want them to smoke at a later point in time,” he says. “Soaked wood chips have to dehydrate (get back to their non-soaked state) before they can begin to smoke.”

Can I use an electric smoker in the house?

“No, you should never use an electric smoker inside because the smoke contains dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and other chemicals that don’t belong inside your house,” Matassa says.

How do I clean an electric smoker?

While it can differ for different types of smokers, Matassa suggests making an even soak of hot water and white vinegar. “If you have heavily baked-on debris, soak some paper towels in the mixture and place them over these areas,” he says. “Allow the paper towels to sit for 10-15 minutes, then remove and clean. For stubborn areas, I remove the paper towels and scrape the area with a polycarbonate scraper; never use a metal scraper or anything else abrasive inside your smoker. Using abrasives will only make the smoker harder to clean the next time you use it and for all future cleanings.”

Shuman also suggests not cleaning the entire smoker, just the racks themselves. “I would leave the sides of your smoker alone and let it get a patina (or cure) on it—sort of like seasoning your smoker,” he says.

Accessories to Consider Purchasing Alongside Your Electric Smoker

Water pan

Many top electric smokers come with water pans, but if yours doesn’t, it might be worth getting. Erica Blaire Roby, season 2 winner of BBQ Brawl on Food Network, says you can really use any disposable aluminum casserole pan (like these from Amazon) as your water pan if you don’t have one. And what’s cool about having a water pan in your smoker is that you can use it to impart more flavor into your food.

“You can actually put your marinade into that water pan, so when that steam is created, it’s also bringing even more flavor up,” Roby says. “I know a lot of people, if they’re doing fish in a vertical smoker or a vertical grill, what they’ll do is they’ll add citrus—lemon peels, orange peels, stuff like that—into the water so that they’re getting those kinds of flavors into their food as well.”

Internal thermometer

If you’re looking to get into smoking, you’ll want to grab an internal thermometer. We recommend this wireless one from MEATER, which you can leave in your food while cooking. Through their app, you can monitor the temperature the entire time, and it can even estimate how long your food needs to cook and rest before you can enjoy it.

Mat

This waterproof and non-slip mat from Amazon is perfect to slide under your smoker and keep your driveway, deck, or backyard patio free from splatter or spills.

Final Take

The best home electric smokers are well-insulated, heavy duty, and maintain heat consistently. Though some of them like the Cookshack and the Traeger can be a bit pricey, it’s ultimately worth the heftier price tag if you’re someone who truly enjoys smoking all sorts of different foods and will use it regularly.

For generations, bakers  have been mixing fat into flour to make dough—either with their fingers, food processors, or pastry blenders. Perhaps one of the most humble kitchen tools, the pastry blender makes easy, and even comfortable, work of mixing cold butter, shortening, or lard into flour to make a beautifully flaky dough.

“Making pastries can be tricky!” says Nicole Patel, owner and chocolatier at Delysia Chocolatier. “Ever wondered how to create a perfectly flaky crust or beautifully fluffy biscuits? A pastry blender is the answer! For years, I would mix the butter and flour mixture together by hand. What a mess it would create, and the pastry dough would be tough in the end. A pastry blender ensures that the butter doesn’t become a melted mess in your hands when attempting to blend it with the flour.” Knowing that a food processor, blender, or even the best stand mixers won’t do the job as well as this pie tool can, we set out to find the best pastry blenders to help you craft irresistibly tender pastries at home.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: OXO Good Grips Dough Blender and Cutter

Material: stainless steel Weight: 0.15 pounds Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Comfortable handle
  • Easy to clean
  • Can be utilized for more than just combining butter and flour
  • Sturdy

Cons

  • Handle can be too large for some
  • Handle is known to break after a few years

Why we chose it: This pastry blender is well-loved for how comfortable it is to use and how well it holds up compared to other pastry cutters on the market.

Whether you make pastry at home every day or every so often, this dough blender will make the job much easier. The soft handle is not only non-slip, but it will also help keep some of the pressure off your hand while cutting butter into flour. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe, which makes it super easy come clean-up time.

What’s great about this tool, too, is that it can be utilized for more than just biscuit and pie doughs. Patel uses it for oil-based doughs and making her chocolates. “I use this exact pastry blender at home when I make chapatis (Indian flat bread) when I cook traditional North Indian meals,” she says. “Though chapatis don’t contain butter, I love using a pastry blender to mix the oil, flour, and salt to create the dough. At Delysia Chocolatier’s Culinary Center, this tool is primarily used when I create our gianduja, blending the roasted nuts and handmade marzipan with the layers of chocolate. Very similar to the butter and flour mixture, we don’t want the milk fat in the chocolate to separate in the warmth of our hands when mixing with the chocolate, so the pastry blender is the perfect tool.”

And better yet, this is one of the best pastry blenders because it tends to last and is altogether sturdy, which can be hard to come by. Some buyers have mentioned that the handle is liable to break after years of having pressure put on it, though. However, this is not entirely unusual for pastry cutters. Others have also mentioned that the handle can be a bit too big for some users.

Best Budget: Lodge Pastry Blender

Material: wooden handle, stainless steel blades | Weight: 0.19 pounds | Dishwasher Safe: no

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Durable

Cons

  • Hand-wash only

Why we chose it: For less than $10, this pastry blender is incredibly economical with sturdy blades for cutting up cold butter into flour.

“This pastry blender from Lodge Cast Iron is my favorite!” says April Franqueza, pastry chef at High Hampton. “Like everything they make, it’s a workhorse, but the wooden handle makes it pretty enough for me to leave out on my countertop during the summer when I’m making a lot of pie dough for fruit pies. The stainless steel blades will never rust; the only con is that the wooden handle makes it hand wash only.”

There are quite a few low-cost pastry cutters on the market, though many of them run into issues with being flimsy. But the Lodge version is one of the best budget options for the fact that it has very quality, sturdy blades that don’t bend out of place.

Like, Franqueza said, the only downside is that this pastry blender needs to be hand-washed, so just make sure to watch your fingers when cleaning the blades.

Most Durable: Williams Sonoma Olivewood Pastry Blender

Material: olivewood handle, stainless steel blades Weight: 0.5 pounds | Dishwasher Safe: no

Pros

  • Sturdy
  • High quality
  • Lasts for years

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Pricey

Why we chose it: With a stunning wooden handle, this Williams Sonoma pastry blender is the kind of kitchen tool you may well pass on to future generations.

Although on the pricey side for a pastry blender, this one will give you your money’s worth. It’s well-made and built to last, with an olivewood handle that will add some style to the mix. “I personally love the Williams Sonoma Olivewood Pastry Blender,” says Cambrea Gordon, the pastry chef behind Cambrea Bakes. “It’s really great quality, and I’ve had it for years.”

It’s truly hard to come by a pastry blender that can stand up to the test of time, but this version can. Like the Lodge pastry cutter, though, this one is also hand-wash only.

Best Grip: Gorilla Grip Pastry Dough Blender & Butter Cutter

Material: rubber handle, stainless steel blades Weight: 5.3 ounces Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Thick, comfortable handle
  • Affordable
  • Comes in multiple sizes

Cons

  • Runs small

Why we chose it: With sharp blades and a comfortable handle, the Gorilla Grip dough blender is efficient and easy on your hands.

“I love using the Gorilla Grip Pastry Dough Blender and Butter Cutter because of the thick, sharp blades and handle,” says Romain Cornu, global corporate pastry chef of Tao Group Hospitality. One of the best pastry blenders for grip, the Gorilla Grip has a comfortable, non-slip rubber handle to help you power through cold butter, shortening, or lard. It also comes in multiple sizes, so you can get the one that fits best in your hand. And better yet, it’s less than $10!

When it comes to the sizing, though, this pastry cutter comes in medium and large on Amazon, but many who ordered the medium remarked that theirs seemed small; we recommend ordering the large.

Best Set: Spring Chef Dough Blender & Pastry Cutter Set

Material: stainless steel | Weight: 12.6 ounces | Dishwasher Safe: yes

Pros

  • Heavy duty
  • Affordable
  • Both items can go beyond working with dough

Cons

  • Not expressly stated as hand-wash-only or dishwasher-safe
  • Dough blender handle is too small for some

Why we chose it: A recommendation from one of our experts, Spring Chef makes hardy, affordable pastry blenders, and for around $10, you can get a quality dough blender and a pastry cutter.

While Cornu likes the Gorilla Grip for its comfortable handle and sharp blades, he likes Spring Chef because of how heavy duty it is. This pastry blender is also sharp (so watch your fingers!), sturdy, and is likely to last you. The pastry cutter that comes in the set is also sharp and great for slicing into dough. But both items can go well beyond the bounds of just pastry. The pastry blender can be utilized to mash bananas or avocados, and the pastry cutter can be used for transferring minced veggies to a bowl or pan or moving hot cookies to a cooling rack.

That being said, some buyers have found the handle on the dough blender to be too small for their hands. As well, Spring Chef doesn’t expressly state if the pastry cutter and dough blender are dishwasher safe. They appear to hold up in the dishwasher, but this lack of guidance does make it hard to properly care for your set.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Pastry Blender

Quality

“Quality should always be at the top of your mind,” Gordon says. “Going for a cheaper blender that has really flexible blades is not going to be strong enough to last very long.” You’ll want to make sure the blades are sturdy, as well as the handle, so that you don’t accidentally get hurt from the blades flipping around onto your hand or the handle coming loose. If you’re shopping in person, Gordon recommends moving the blades back and forth to make sure they won’t flex when you’re using it.

Grip

“Comfort is the most important factor to consider,” Patel says. Generally, you’ll want to go for a handle that has some cushion and is durable enough to withstand a lot of pressure being applied to it. Plus, you’ll want to look out for a straight handle, Gordon says. “Any blender that has a straight and not curved handle is going to be more comfortable to use, especially when you need it to cut straight down into your bowl.”

Cost

Pastry blenders are typically a pretty inexpensive baking utensil, so while you might want to pay a little more for a particularly durable one, Caroline Schiff, executive pastry chef at Gage & Tollner, recommends not going crazy. “It’s such a simple piece of equipment, and spending lots isn’t necessary,” she says. When it comes to cost, you’ll largely want to consider how often you plan to use this tool and how durable you need it to be, and then decide your optimal price point from there. That being said, you can get a good one for less than $20, so there’s really no need to go over that amount.

FAQs

Is a pastry blender the same as a pastry cutter?

Yes, though pastry cutters can also refer to bench scrapers and wheel pastry cutters.

How do you clean a pastry blender?

Many of them are dishwasher safe, so sticking them in the dishwasher is the easiest way to clean them. However, if yours is hand-wash-only, try soaking it in hot, soapy water, then rinse it clean, gently scrubbing any excess pastry off the blades with a scrubbing sponge. If hand-washing, be very careful with your fingers and hands around the blades so you don’t accidentally cut yourself.

Is a pastry blender better than a food processor for making pastry?

Overwhelmingly yes, according to our experts. “Personally, I do not like food processors for pastries,” says Patel. “It can overwork the dough, and I lose control over the delicate blending of the butter with the flour. The warmth of the motor running in the food processor can also heat up the butter some and break down the milk fat. Plus, food processors are also so bulky and harder to clean. All around, a pastry blender is a more effective and efficient tool.”

Final Thoughts

When it comes to pastry blenders, they’re intended to make what can be an arduous task easier, so pick one that has a comfortable grip, sturdy blades, and a price point that delivers decent quality without going overboard.

Methodology

Many pastry blenders look pretty similar and perform very similar functions—and most of them cost less than $20. So when deciding which pastry blenders to include on this list, we took to the experts, asking pastry chefs and baking influencers for their pastry cutters of choice. We also looked at durability, how comfortable the grip is, the ease with which it cuts, and how easy it is to clean. With all of this in mind, we made our top selections.
